Don was my doubles partner on the WGHS tennis team and we were very good friends.  After college and serving in the Army, Don settled in Madison, Wisconsin where he met and married his wife Carol.  They had a son, Scott, who I believe is your basic mathematics wizard.  Don had a telecommunications business, and a number of years ago he and Carol moved to a small town outside Madison where they fixed up a beautiful old house and ran a bread-and-breakfast.  He and Carol were avid tennis players through all the years.  He was your basic good guy, a gentle soul with a good outlook on life and a good friend.

A few years ago Don had a pain in his leg, which turned out to be caused by an aggressive form of acute leukemia.  He fought through many treatments, but ultimately he succumbed to an infection caused by the depletion of his immune system.  A couple of years ago Susan and I were able to spend several weeks with Don when he came to Seattle for a stem-cell transplant.  He had hardly changed a bit, and throughout a difficult trial he maintained a positive attitude but the odds were apparently stacked against him.  We were lucky to have him as a friend, and our visit with him reminded us again of  the wonderful friends we made in high school, and of our good fortune to be blessed with good health.
