I have known John for many years in high school ... hanging around with him, playing basketball with Homer Drew, Jack Coombs and many other players during gym, after school and during basketball tryouts under Tyke Yates.  I ended up playing the church league basketball as a regular player throughout my high school years!  I was sad to learn that he died too young after having a great life.

John was a really good basketball player, smart, and a good guy.

If I recall, John was not only all-state in basketball, but I thought he was “Mr. Missouri” in basketball our senior year. He may have earned a basketball scholarship to Northwestern, but Northwestern only took smart jocks.

I’d see John every year or so when the Northwestern Wildcats would come to play Purdue. I’m sure (?) that the Boilermakers demolished the Wildcats, though. Purdue did not just take smart jocks.

I remember trying out for the WG basketball team, maybe my sophomore year. Why, I don’t know. I was not athletic, but I really liked basketball. The drill the first day was one-on-one. John had to guard me. I don’t think the defender was allowed to use his arms to guard. But he was stuck like glue to me. I was deflated when I was immediately cut and somehow caught a glimpse of the coach’s note by my name: “slow.”
