Someone needs to say a few words about  Ollie.  His life was short but he is missed by his family, I'm sure, but by me also.

We used to fish together at local streams (with little success) and talk.  From Ollie I learned a lot about the local blues scene and associated local radio stations.  From Ollie I learned about KATZ and it's one of it's owners and DJ's Dave Dixon and the live broadcasts from local lounges like Slick's Lakeside Club in E. St. Louis.  Ollie was ahead of his time but didn't live to experience the fulfillment of it.

He was killed in an accident going back to Mizzou after a weekend at home (from my admittedly faulty memory).   I think during his reshman year.   I believe Bill Stanpehl was killed in the same accident along with a couple of others.  I apologize for my vague recollection of details.  It's not something I like to remember.

Ollie was a friend.

I remember the accident.  There were four of them in the car.  Ollie Alton, Gary Schmidt, Bill Stampehl, and Bob Weber.  All four of them were 1962 WG grads and were killed driving back from Kansas to Mizzou on a Saturday night after the K State Missouri football game.  The guy that hit them head on was passing in a no passing zone.  We lost 4 good guys.

I too played on the Khoury league team with Ollie.  He and his mother and father were special people.  I believe Ollie was an adopted child.  He was a good pitcher.  I played somewhere in the infield and Ollie and I had a pick-off play at second that almost always worked.
